Manchaca
Manchaca is a small unincorporated community in Travis County, Texas, United States. It is located about 12 miles southwest of Downtown Austin in the Austin metropolitan area. The community is part of the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metropolitan statistical area. The population was 1,484 at the 2010 census. Manchaca is believed to be named after a Tonkawa Indian Chief named Makkai who once lived in the area. The name "Manchaca" is derived from the Tonkawa word for "resting place". In 1837, a post office was established in Manchaca and remained in operation until 1871. In 1857, the first public school in Travis County opened in Manchaca. Manchaca served as a stop on the Austin and San Antonio Railroad from 1876 until 1881 when service was discontinued. In 1905, Manchaca became a stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and remained so until 1932 when service was again discontinued. Despite its close proximity to Austin, Manchaca has always been primarily a rural community. However, with Austin's continued growth and expansion, Manchaca has seen an increase in development in recent years. New subdivisions and businesses are popping up all over the small community, but it still retains its small-town feel.
