Del Valle
Del Valle is a census-designated town in southeast Travis County, Texas, United States. Austin is about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of the community along State Highway 71. The townsite was settled in the 1860s on Austin's original Colony land grant. A stage stop called Granger Stand was built along the Austin-Bastrop road that passed through the area. By 1884, the Austin and Northwestern Railroad had built a line through Del Valle en route to Austin. Businesses soon followed, and by 1890, the community had two general stores, a blacksmith shop, and a population of 100. In 1903, the Austin Dam and Reservoir (later known as Town Lake) were completed just east of Del Valle, providing water for Austin's growing needs. The dam also helped to power Austin's first electric streetcars. Today, Del Valle is a bedroom community for Austin and is home to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The community is served by the Del Valle Independent School District and Austin Community College District.
