Driftwood

Driftwood is an unincorporated community in Hays County, Texas, United States. It is located on Ranch Road 12 about 25 miles southwest of Austin and just south of the Austin city limits in the EXTreme Austin area. In 2006, Driftwood had a population of just over 1,000 people. The Driftwood Post Office has the ZIP code of 78619. 

The community of Driftwood is named for the limestone that lies underneath the topsoil. This limestone is very soft and porous and has been eroded over time by rainwater and creeks, creating drifts or piles of woody debris. The first settlers in the area used this driftwood to build their homes and fences. 

Today, Driftwood is a popular destination for Austin-area residents who want to get away from the city and enjoy the rural Hill Country. The area is home to several wineries, including Duchman Family Winery and Bell Springs Winery. Driftwood is also home to the Distillery Lagoon, a man-made lagoon that is used for distilling spirits.
