Gruene Historic District

Gruene Historic District is located in New Braunfels, Texas. The district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since November 1978. It encompasses 142 acres and contains more than 60 structures that date back to the 1800s.


The district was founded in 1844 by German immigrants who named it after their hometown of Grünstadt. The early settlers built homes, businesses, and churches in the district. Many of the structures were destroyed in a fire in 1869, but they were rebuilt soon afterwards.


The district is home to several historic landmarks, including the Gruene Schoolhouse (built in 1879), the Grist Mill (built in 1878), and the Gruene General Store (built in 1869). The district is also home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and businesses.


 Visitors to the Gruene Historic District can take a self-guided walking tour of the area or visit one of the district's museums. The district is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Admission is free. More about New Braunfels here.
